THIRTY-ONE

Detach came close to slapping Broce. The young man fidgeted and paced as if he were a caged lion.

“Why don’t we just hook a cable to the thing and lift it from up here?” Broce pointed down to the sea. “Or, how about just leaving that one and using another one. We have plenty.”

“Three reasons.” Detach held up a finger. “One. If Elroy’s right, it’ll probably set the thing off and destroy the tower.” He did not need to add that it could rupture the cold fusion power pack mounted to it. A second finger. “Two, we don’t want any explosions to damage the wreck any more than it already is. It’ll make our job that much harder.” He held up the third finger. “We can’t leave it behind. Period, and you know why.” He did not need to go into the cold fusion power pack.

“Four,” Becky said. “In case that creature is still in there, we don’t want to hurt it, or… piss it off.”

“Elroy, how you doing?” Detach spoke into the microphone on Ruby’s control box.

“It’s what I’ve been brought here for. While I’m on the way down, power up the other towers. I’ll need all the light I can get.”

“We’ll have to run the cables down from the generator.” Barry gave Detach a knowing look.

Detach wished they could just forget the ruse and turn them on by remote, instead of messing with the phony cables. However, they had to protect their secret technology. “Broce, head back out. You’ll need to run the cables. For now, forget about the deck side light array. I have a feeling we won’t need them anyway, as bright as these lights are.”

“When I reach the bottom, I’ll just hang tight. Get the kid down here, pronto. I don’t want to stay here all day.”

Detach had been honest with Elroy and told him about the cold fusion power packs. Broce knew the secret also. As a budding electrical engineer, the kid would have smelled a rat when he had to hook up the cables to obviously dead terminals, especially ones open to the water.

With time to kill, Detach found Vladimir back on the fantail, watching the other boats trolling for the creature. He waved to grab the Russian’s attention.

“After this is over, I want you to get a good workout with the suit.” Detach gazed down at the water

“I am anxious to start,” the Russian said with a grin.

“If you pick it up as well as I think you will, you can go down with me tomorrow afternoon, if…” Detach hesitated, “if we can get over a few ‘bumps’ in the road.”

An hour later, and with much grumbling from an increasingly annoyed Elroy, the fake cables hung in place and the lights ready for Ruby to energize from her computer. Detach had gone over the gist of how the light system worked with her and he knew each light would receive a signal that turned on their fusion generators. At the same time,
